Borrowing Information for Students

Library Cards

Mizzou ID Card

Your Student ID card serves as your library card.

You are responsible for:

  • All material checked out on your card. Do not loan it to others.
  • Knowing due dates. Dates may change based on holds and recall requests.
  • Returning or renewing materials on time.
  • Library notices sent when you are out of town.
  • Fines

Loan Periods

Loan periods vary among libraries and may be determined by the status of the borrower, type of material and individual collection policy. As a general rule, the Law Library's classified treatises circulate for 120 days, and reserve items circulate for 2 hours. Many items in the Law Library's collection do not circulate at all. These items include reporters, statutes, and journals.

Circulation Policies

Circulation policies are designed to provide equal access to the collection for all borrowers. The borrower is responsible for being aware of these policies. Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy, but the borrower is responsible for accumulated fines whether or not the overdue notice is received. Library fines may be paid by mail or in person at the Circulation Desk. Delinquent accounts may result in the revocation of borrowing privileges, blocking of registration, graduation and transcripts, and/or referral to a collection agency.

If a borrower feels that a fine has been levied in error, or has questions as to why a fine has been levied, he or she should contact the Circulation Supervisor immediately.

Interlibrary Loan

Law School students, faculty and staff that need items not owned by a MERLIN/MOBIUS library member may request them through Interlibrary Loan. To request an item, please fill out and submit this form with as much information as you know about an item. We are generally able to provide books and/or photocopies of articles within a week to ten working days.

For assistance please contact the Interlibrary Loan Assistant by or at (573) 882-1918.

Course Reserves

Course Reserves

Faculty sometimes set aside resources in the library for use by an entire class. They are located in the Reserve Room and may be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

There are two photocopiers in the library, one on the first floor and one on the second. To make a copy, students must purchase a copicard at the Circulation Desk. Photocopies are $.10 each. If the photocopier malfunctions or runs out of supplies, please ask at the Circulation Desk for assistance.

Study Space

Study Space

The Law Library provides a variety of study spaces in the library.

Carrels are available throughout the library. Many are assigned to students at the beginning of each semester, but some are unassigned and open for use. Unassigned carrels have a sign on them indicating that they are for temporary use only.

For more information see the Study Carrels page.

Quiet Study

For some students, quiet space is a necessity for effective study and research. While we attempt to keep the entire library as a relatively quiet space, there are two areas, the Sub-Plaza and the 3rd floor (link to map), set aside for silence.

Study Rooms

Study rooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the library. They may be reserved in advance at the Circulation Desk or they may be used spontaneously if they have not been reserved.

Smart Suites

The Law Library provides special study rooms for student collaboration. The Smart Suites contain DVD/VHS players, computers, speakers, smart boards, and projection. Laptops may be connected to the projectors. Smart Suites may be reserved in advance at the Circulation Desk or they may be used spontaneously if they have not been reserved.

For more information see the Smart Suites page.
