This week at the law school, the second “Life of a Lawyer” luncheon will occur on Monday, October 1st at 1:00 pm in room 107.  Michael Byrne, a criminal defense lawyer at Haden & Byrne in Columbia will be the guest speaker.  This event is limited and an RSVP is required.

Students will also have the opportunity to network with alumni right here in Columbia.  The Dean’s Tour event hosted by Wally Bley (’80) at the Country Club of Missouri on Tuesday, October 2nd at 5:30 pm is a great chance to mix and mingle with alumni as they gather to meet the new Dean, Gary Myers. Check the blog tomorrow for tips on professional networking!

Also this week is the beginning of MU Law’s Pro Bono Month!  National Pro Bono Week is October 21-27.   During the week hundreds of sponsors will coordinate events throughout the United States. To view the events go to  The purpose of the national celeration is to highlight the importance of pro bono contributions by lawyers and to serve those in need in the community.

At MU Law we will honor National Pro Bono Week by partnering with Mid-Missouri Legal Services (MMLS) to conduct two clinics throughout the month.  Participation will be limited to students with Rule 13 certification who attend the mandatory training session.

The first training will occur this week on October 3rd for the Power of Attorney Clinic.  Susan Lutton, Executive Director of MMLS, will be in Room 3 at 1:00 pm to go over the paperwork for medical power of attorneys with student participants.  Clinics will be held at:

  • Oak Towers in Columbia at 9:30 am on Friday, October 5;
  • The John C. Harris Center in Fulton at 9:30 am on Friday, October 12; and
  • Robert L. Hyder Apartments in Jefferson City at 9:30 am on Friday, October 26.

In order to participate, you must attend the training on October 3rd and be Rule 13 certified.

In addition, we will be co-sponsoring an Uncontested Divorce Clinic at Mid-Missouri Legal Services located at 205 E. Forest Avenue in Columbia every Friday during October from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  The training will be at MMLS on Friday, October 5th.  Students must register to participate and be Rule 13 certified.  Contact Linda Lorenz for more information.
